The work
What we take on
Four things, and we say no to the rest. Every piece is read at least twice before it leaves, and we tell you which kind of edit a draft needs before we quote for it.
In detail
-
Structural editing
By the draftA full read, a structural pass and a written note on what the piece is actually arguing. Usually the cheapest way to find out that a draft contains two essays.
-
Line editing
By the wordSentence by sentence, with the changes tracked and the reasoning left in the margin so you can overrule us.
-
Writing
By the pieceEssays, reports and the long pieces nobody in-house has time to start. We interview, read the file, and hand back something finished.
-
House style
Fixed feeA written standard your team can follow without asking us again. Delivered as a document, not a workshop.
We tell you which kind of edit a piece needs before we quote for it.
Before you write
Questions we get
How do you price a piece?
By the shape of the job, not by the hour. A structural edit is quoted from the draft; writing is quoted from the brief. You get one number and the scope it covers, and we do not revise it because the work turned out harder than we thought.
How long does it take?
A structural edit on five thousand words is usually a week. Longer pieces, and anything with a committee attached, take longer — and we will say so before you commit rather than after.
Do you work with agencies?
Often. We can work under your name or ours, and we are perfectly happy to be invisible.
Will you argue with me?
Once, in writing, with reasons. After that it is your piece and we will set it the way you want it.
